Summer Racing at Toronto World Cup
With Paris 2024 Games less than 2 years away, David Popovici, Leon Marchand, Mollie O’Callaghan and of course our very own Funkita athlete Summer McIntosh are drawing attention whenever they dive in and race. Which is why all eyes will be on Summer as she takes to the international stage again, and this time it's on home soil at her local pool, the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.
Summer is set to compete in the 2nd leg of the FINA World Cup. At last year’s Tokyo Olympic Games Summer was just 14 years old. Fast-track to 2022, she is now a dual individual World Champion and dual Commonwealth Champion.

McIntosh, alongside Aussie F-Teamer Holly Barratt, will be one of two Funkita athletes in action in Toronto. Holly will no doubt be in the mix in the sprint Freestyle, Butterfly and Backstroke events, while Summer’s program is set to be a big one. She's entered in the 400m Freestyle, 100 & 200m Backstroke, 200m Breaststroke and the 200m and 400 IM. We haven’t seen much of Summer on the world stage in the individual backstroke and breaststroke events but nonetheless, this may strike some fear into those specializing in these disciplines.
The 400m Freestyle is shaping up to be an exciting showpiece in Toronto with Katie Ledecky set to make an appearance, alongside the gold medalist from the Berlin leg, Siobhan Haughey. Haughey, of Hong Kong, clocked 3:56.52 in Berlin, so Ariarne Titmus’s world record of 3:53.92 may be tested.

Earlier this year, Summer dominated in the 400m IM at the Commonwealth Games where she clocked a 4:29.01 in the final, claiming the World Junior Record and Canadian Record. Mireia Belmonte’s short course world record stands at 4:18.94 so it may be a tough ask for Summer but anything could happen with this teenager.
The current holder of 4 individual World Junior Records, McIntosh will also have eyes on her in the 200m Butterfly and the 200m IM. Stay tuned and posted to our socials for the results, with the Toronto leg of the FINA World Cup set for October 28-30.
