Olympian Mel Wu Takes on SAS Australia

Melissa Wu is a household name in Australia and is a long time F-Teamer with a haul of Olympic and Commonwealth Games medals. On February 21, our Funkita star is set to prove she is much more than just a stellar diver. The 29-year-old will be put through the wringer in the new series of SAS Australia which airs on Channel 7.

Mel has taken her Funkitas around the world throughout her career.

Enduring the physical and psychological tests of the SAS selection process, Mel and the star-studded lineup will be faced with the ultimate challenge. Some may say she is crazy, but for Mel it is an opportunity of a lifetime. “I was sitting in post-Olympic-Games hotel quarantine last year when Jana Pittman messaged me and asked if I would consider going on SAS Australia. Initially I resisted because I didn’t think I would be physically capable as I’m pint sized.”

The hesitancy was temporary, however, and the show’s filming process was timely as it coincided with Mel’s post-Olympic hiatus from diving. No stranger to hard work and dedication, she believes her resilience and strength of mind from years of elite diving training helped her make it through the battlefield in one piece.

Mel smashes her dryland sessions in Funkita Fit.

“I focused on getting as strong and fit as possible in the lead-up and committing fully to each task while I was on the show,” Mel said. Although there was always a risk of something adverse happening which could have potentially impacted her training, she approached it like the champion she is. Not to mention that the candidates were eating and sleeping in gruesome conditions, Mel unfortunately sustained an injury on the course from which she is still recovering.

She is a veteran of the Diving Australia team, one of Funkita's partners.

“The most valuable thing I learned on the course is that anticipation is worse than participation. I’ve always felt very nervous every time I compete and have a tendency to overthink things.” On the course Mel learned to control the controllable, as the saying goes.

We can't wait to tune in to see Mel on the new series of SAS Australia and have every confidence that our pint-sized superstar will smash it!
